FOLK FORTNIGHT

East Auckland Folk Project is a non-profit group developed by Cara Gilkison-Asher and Karen Jones with the mission of promoting Folk Music in East Auckland. Our first project was two concerts associated with the first Folk Fortnight held in March/April 2014.

Gavin Asher, Folk Musician has started giving beginner guitar lessons in Cockle Bay. Gavin has played the guitar since he was nine years old, and has performed internationally on tours. He has delivered guitar workshops for beginners at many Auckland Folk Festivals. He is great with children, also running Kids Sessions for many years. Some young adults in the folk scene talk about how their parents would drop them off with Gavin and then pick them up again at the end of the festival. Gavin is a much-loved grandfather who teaches guitar to his grandson. He is recently retired, and has more time to teach the skills that have given him so much joy over the years. You can hear Gavin performing, both singing and playing the guitar on the Music page. You can read a little more about Gavin here. To contact Gavin, use the contact page.

Auckland Folk Festival went off with a hiss and a roar! Thanks to the Committee, including Folky Singaround Group regulars Tony Smyth and Paul Howarth for all the work they did to get the show on the road.

East Auckland was well represented with "The Great Divide" performing in the opening concert. (We still claim Karen as an "Eastie" as she is still part of the East Auckland Folk Project. Paul, Cara and Gavin performed in the Ewan MaColl Tribute Concert which was hailed as an enormous success.

The performance at the Auckland Town Hall Concert Chamber on Dec 15th was a most awesome gig. The group (Carovan) was very successful with cheers, stamps and shouts in acknowledgement. The Rainbow Carol, written  and sung by Cara was received with cheers. A very satisfactory outcome for a group who didn't ever practice altogether before the big night!

Folky Singaround Group  - Held once a month in Cockle Bay, on the 2nd Friday of the month and Cara and Gavin's place. Contact Cara via the Contact Page for address details. Please note there is no Singaround in December.
